According to Anya Temer, DO, founder and medical director of Total Holistic Center in Florida, holistic remedies are useful for boosting immunity and helping to fight off colds and the flu. She notes that these attainable, daily habits should be incorporated into a long-term lifestyle for the full wellness-enhancing effect. Below are Dr. Temer's top holistic tips for strengthening the immune system.

1. Go Green

Eat green and colorful vegetables to add much-needed nutrients to one's daily diet. Fiber in vegetables keeps the digestive system, microbiome and the immune system healthy in order to fight off infections.

2. H2O Flow

Drink enough water. The human body is 60% water, and dehydration causes reduction in overall volume of blood and lymphatic fluids, which are crucial for a healthy immune response. Dehydration and inflammation are the most common culprits when it comes to chronic immune system impairment.

3. Move It

Moving the body is super important to keeping the immune system well. Try at-home workouts, or walking or running outside. Crank up the music, because simply moving the feet helps with lymph fluid, detoxing and cleansing the system.

4. Meditate

When stressed out, the immune system takes a hit and its ability to fight off antigens is lowered, creating susceptibility to infections. Try a guided relaxation video and listen for a few minutes, a few times a day, especially when falling asleep. Put on some candles, turn down the lights, take a deep breath and relax.

5. Fundamental Vitamin Intake

Even when eating a well-rounded diet, most people still end up having a deficiency or two. Take a few fundamental supplements like vitamins C and D, zinc, multivitamins, omega 3’s and probiotics daily; however, a biometric comprehensive blood test for micronutrient deficiencies is much more accurate for better results.

6. Sleep In

Find ways to get to sleep and stay asleep! The body needs to regenerate to build up the immune system, and grow new cells while getting rid of the old. Herbal teas with valerian, passionflower, lemon balm and chamomile, as well as certain supplements can help relax the mind and body to fall asleep organically.

7. Sugar = Sick

Sugar feeds yeast and “bad” bacteria in the gut, which in turn increases inflammation, food sensitivities and decreases immune function. Stick with fruits, vegetables and healthy sugar substitutes such as organic stevia.

8. Connect

Stay socially connected, even while social distancing and isolating. Connection is vital to human health and well-being.

9. Be Canna-curious

Support the endocannabinoid system in the body. CBD, which is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis or hemp, can help the body relax when applied topically, reducing stress, improving sleep, decreasing pain and decreasing inflammation.
