The Most and Least Stressed States in America

Personal finance website WalletHub has released "2021's Most & Least Stressed States," a report that compared the 50 states across metrics ranging from average hours worked to the personal bankruptcy rate to the share of adults getting adequate sleep. 

Most Stressed States:

  1. Nevada
  2. Louisiana
  3. New Mexico
  4. West Virginia
  5. Mississippi
  6. Oklahoma
  7. Tennessee
  8. California
  9. Kentucky
  10. Texas

Least Stressed States:

  1. Kansas
  2. Montana
  3. New Hampshire
  4. Nebraska
  5. Wisconsin
  6. North Dakota
  7. Iowa
  8. Minnesota
  9. Utah
  10. South Dakota

Key findings include:

  • Nebraska has the lowest unemployment rate, 4.2%, which is three times lower than in Nevada, the highest at 12.8% percent.
  • New Hampshire has the lowest share of the population living in poverty, while Mississippi has the highest at 20.3%.
  • Vermont has the lowest share of adults in fair to poor health, while West Virginia has the highest at 24.2%.
  • Rhode Island has the most psychologists per 100,000 residents at 77, which is 8.6 times more than in Mississippi which as only 9.
