Sticky Situation: Instant Termination

When is it right to instantly fire a therapist?

The Situation: “We had a therapist who was complaining about how much she gets paid and badmouthing the owner to a client,”recalls Summer Langhorne, general manager of milk + honey in Austin, Texas. “She even asked the client to give her a larger tip rather than upgrading her service.”

The Solution: “That was unacceptable and we fired her,”says Langhorne. “It’s important to have clear policies on what qualifies for instant termination. We document behavior, have conversations with employees and offer coaching and training, but egregious acts are a non-negotiable. Sometimes you just have to let them go.”
