Dermalogica was honored to welcome United States Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker to the company’s headquarters last week. Secretary Pritzker, whose Cabinet position focuses on providing American businesses and entrepreneurs with the tools they need to grow and thrive, met with Dermalogica co-founder and Chief Visionary Jane Wurwand to learn about Dermalogica’s new FITE Entrepreneur Accelerator program. The program, which supports entrepreneurship in the salon industry, was just announced as Wurwand’s signature initiative as a Presidential Ambassador for Global Entrepreneurship (PAGE). Wurwand was appointed as a PAGE Ambassador in June 2016 to help develop the next generation of entrepreneurs in the USA and abroad.
Upon arrival, Secretary Pritzker toured Dermalogica’s headquarters – including the corporate office, International Dermal Institute classrooms, and 83,000-square-foot warehouse – to learn how the global business is run from the Southern California space. Wurwand explained how education and vocational training have been the cornerstones of Dermalogica’s business model for over 30 years, and that the company’s relationships with thousands of salons across the globe give Dermalogica a unique window into women-founded start-ups. With women making up 85% of the salon industry and owning 61% of salon businesses, Dermalogica knows that vocational training can serve as an important pathway to entrepreneurship; Wurwand explained that challenges often come from lack of funding or proper business training.
Secretary Pritzker and Wurwand then met to discuss how the FITE Entrepreneur Accelerator will aim to bridge the business skills gap that currently exists in the salon industry by creating opportunities for entrepreneurship education. The program is being developed to offer scholarships for online business education, plus the creation of an online resource platform offering classes in business, financial literacy, marketing and management, with the potential of impacting more than 100,000 women over the next three years.
