Industry Pros on the Benefits of Nutraceuticals and Why You Should Offer Them

Nadia Hlibka, owner, Indigo Oasis Skincare in Tucson, Arizona: We approach skin care from the inside out. It’s a three-pronged system comprised of a daily topical regimen, a healthy lifestyle and regular visits to a skincare professional. When the external is supported by the internal, results can be dramatic—so why not include a beneficial supplement? It can only help enhance and augment overall skin health.

Lora Lynn Hochhalter, owner and manager, Lora’s Boutique and Wellness in Wishek, North Dakota: Offering nutritional supplements allows us to provide a more complete service for each client—we’re helping them from head to toe, and start to finish. Quality brands also provide continuing education and support that make a big difference for our guests. From a business standpoint, it creates another recurring revenue stream.

What ingredients do you recommend for specific health goals?

Hochhalter: Hydrolyzed collagen type 2, found in M’lis Radiance Collagen Beauty Drink, enters the body’s cells as a complete collagen. It provides amino acids and hyaluronic acid (HA), which help encourage collagen production, resulting in tighter, better hydrated, plumper and more youthful skin—as well as healthier hair and nails. Radiance also contains CoQ10, which—along with the hydrolyzed collagen—supports joint health and muscle regeneration.

Miller: There are several components we recommend to our clients for overall wellness, which include fatty acids for gut health, and vitamin A for skin health. We specifically like the Jane Iredale supplements because they are bioidentical, so the body is able to recognize the ingredients and respond accordingly.

Hlibka: My favorite skin nourishers are HA, collagen and collagen peptides, and vitamin C. HA exists in all of our joints, mucous membranes and skin
cells, and is a key factor in skin hydration. I recommend Hyalogic’s Synthovial Seven—a liquid supplement containing HA and saline—as well as their Hair, Skin & Nails chewable lozenge, which features HA, biotin and silica. Collagen is the ‘super antiager’ of supplements; taking it internally stimulates the body’s own collagen and elastin production, improving the appearance of the skin and enhancing nail and hair growth. We suggest our powdered collagen that can be mixed with any hot or cold drink. Finally, vitamin C boosts the immune system, promotes hydration and fights free radical damage.

Under what circumstances would you advise a client against taking nutraceuticals?

Miller: If someone is under the care of a physician, we always suggest that they consult with that provider. But because the supplements we sell are food grade, we feel confident that almost everyone can benefit from them.

Hochhalter: The only time I advise against a particular supplement is if someone is allergic to any of the ingredients, or if it’s expected to interact negatively with any prescription medication they may be taking. Proper screening is vital to ensure you know your clients’ needs and restrictions.

Hlibka: Definitely refer clients to their medical professional, especially if you believe a supplement will adversely react with their medication or medical conditions.
