Think that skin and beauty spas have the market covered when it comes to beautiful retail departments? Think again. The retail areas at Spa Habitat, with locations in Texas and Oklahoma, attract wellness-aware clients daily.
Founders Amy and Greg Bohn opened their first Spa Habitat location—a converted 19th-century home in Plano, Texas—in 2005. The business did so well, the couple opened a second in Dallas in 2008, a third at the WinStar World Casino Hotel in Thackerville, Oklahoma, in 2009, and the newest location in West Plano just last year. Each outpost features a beautiful organic apothecary, fully stocked with quality organic products and brands, produced and sourced locally, nationally and from around the world.
“Each facility is a little different—they range in size from 1,700 to 2,400 square feet—but the apothecaries are all very similar, carrying various retail lines and featuring a vintage apothecary feel, with reclaimed wood floors and furniture pieces,” says Amy Bohn. The signature retail areas stock wellness remedies, apparel, books, gifts and home items, in addition to skin, hair, bath and body care, and are responsible for about 20% of total spa sales, she reports. Featured brands include Aromafloria, Clovertree (the spa’s own line), Erbaviva, Farmaesthetics, John Masters Organics, Jurlique, Sonoma Lavender and Woodsprite.
“The apothecary follows all of the same strict ingredient guidelines as does our spa,” Bohn explains. “We only retail products from companies that have strong mission statements, that give back to the community and that have a true ‘green’ commitment.”
As for the holiday retailing season, Spa Habitat is always ready with popular gift items, says Bohn. Attractive baskets loaded with organic products, seasonal organic teas (served at the spa as well as retailed) and seasonal candles top the list. “And, of course,” adds Bohn, “our displays and windows are always custom-decorated for the holidays to lure shoppers.”
