Sticky Situation: The Low-Tipper

How do you handle a client who leaves a noticeably low tip?

The Situation: “Some people don’t think to tip on discounted deals, such as those offered through Groupon, ” says Dori Soukup, CEO of consulting company InSPAration Management. “If they do tip, they tip at the discounted price and not the full price of the service. Then there are just those clients who tip low or just aren’t paying attention when checking out.”

The Solution: “We advise the front desk to say this, ‘Your total for today is such and such, now this does not include gratuity. How would you like to leave gratuity–on the card or in cash?’ That way you aren’t asking them if they want to leave gratuity, you’re asking how they want to leave it,” says Soukup.
