The Industry Responds: How You Can Help

By now, everyone in the United States is reeling over images of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, one of the most destructive natural phenomena to hit the country. Our hearts go out to those affected.

If ever there was a time to come together as an industry, it's now. Not only are many of the spas in the coastal areas of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama closed for the duration, but many of those owners and employees have been forced from their homes as well.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency strongly suggests that those who wish to help donate to voluntary organizations rather than trying to report directly to the area. Below, you'll find contact information for a host of organizations. On September 6, The U.S. Department of Homeland Security activated its National Emergency Resource Registry (NERR) through FEMA. The NERR stands ready to assist the coordination efforts between the resources that are needed and the resources that may be available from the private and public sectors. If your business has resources that may be made available to the response agencies, they may be listed in this registry. (For more information or to register your product or service, visit www.fema.gov/ and click on "Help the Victims of Hurricane Katrina--Register Your Business to Provide Relief.")

(The phone numbers have been set up solely for cash donations and/or volunteers.)

You'll also find a list of associations, industry suppliers and day spas that are holding special events or collecting funds to benefit Hurricane Katrina survivors. Let these businesses serve as inspiration for your own relief effort ideas.

Owner/president Kim Dudek says she is "thrilled to be part of the healing process" as the spa helps to restore health and normalcy to its community. Temporary hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday.

M English Salon, Gulfport, MS, 228/864-6116 or 228/864-6119
Operations Manager Erika Johnson writes, "I am really excited about the future of the Gulf Coast. Our business is better than it has ever been. I think this is a great time to grow a business. We are very blessed to be open; my partner (Melissa English) lost everything. Thank you and everyone for all of your support."

Miss Celie's Spa Orleans, New Orleans, LA, 800/725-2446, www.spaorleans.com
Miss Celie's Spa Orleans and Olde Victorian Inn reopened on October 8, and is offering five B&B rooms and limited spa services. In addition, owners Keith and Andre West-Harrison will share the rebuilding of their businesses with viewers of the online reality series "The Startup 2" from America Online and Entrepreneur.com.

The Spa at the Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans, New Orleans, LA
"I just wanted to say thank you to all who have been praying for me and my family. My wife and my two daughters evacuated along with grandparents and my in-laws to Jackson, Mississippi, to stay with my family the day before the storm. I stayed at the hotel during the storm and if there ever was a hell on earth, I would have to say it was in New Orleans in the days following the storm. I finally made it to Jackson on Friday afternoon to be reunited with my family. I am happy to say all members of my family are OK.

"My home is 42 miles from the hotel in Madisonville, Louisiana. Yes it was a long commute to work everyday, but there was no damage to our house. Of course there is no power, trees are down everywhere and the neighborhood cleanup will be massive, but we were lucky."
Wayne Morris
Spa Director, The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans

Villa Soleil Day Spa, Navarre, FL
"We suffered the loss of our home for seven months and $25,000 uninsured cleanup to the business after Hurricane Ivan. We then suffered another $20,000 loss after Hurricane Dennis and once again became homeless. Luckily, Katrina has only cost us about $8,000 in cleanup and damage, and we have been displaced for a week. I am finding myself once again rebuilding my home and business because I truly believe that we are providing a wonderful service to our community.

"We depend a great deal on the tourist business since we're located on the beach. I employ 20 people, and in our small community that is a considered a lot. I want everyone to know that it isn't easy to rebuild, but it can be done if you truly believe in what you do. Take time to be kind to your neighbor and thank people for everything. We're collecting food, clothes and other necessities for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Ice is in great demand and people are grateful for even a small bag.

"We're located about 4 hours east of New Orleans and we're trying to find housing for as many people as we can even though we're still recovering from a great deal of damage."

Leslie Huckabee, owner
