Sonoma, California-based Hutchinson Consulting has announced that Michael G. Tompkins has joined its recruiting team. For more than 20 years, Tompkins has led teams in the luxury hospitality, wellness and spa industries, and also serves as chairman of the International Spa Association (ISPA). As a former CEO of Miraval Resorts, Hilton Head Health and PALM Health, vice president of hotels & spa at Turning Stone Casino and an executive with Canyon Ranch Health Resorts, Tompkins boasts a diverse background and an ability to create global brand leading teams in the three converging market segments.
Tompkins served with Lori Hutchinson, cofounder of Hutchinson Consulting, on the ISPA board of directors and collaborated with her on staffing assignments for Miraval Resorts. “That personal connection with Lori makes this new development a natural and happy one for us, and especially because Michael is one of the few people whose reach and connections in the worlds of spa, hospitality and wellness rival hers,” explains cofounder Bill Hutchinson. “Michael will be an extraordinary executive recruiter. The third annual event raised just over $100,000 to help survivors of sex trafficking.
On March 19, the Justice and Soul Foundation hosted their third-annual fundraising event, “Fashion SOULstice,” to raise money to continue and expand operations at its cosmetology school in Cambodia and domestically. The event, held at the Lynnwood Convention Center, drew a packed house of 650 attendees and raised just over $100,000.
The highlight of the evening was a fashion show with models styled by 15 local salons and schools. Participating salons and schools showcased fashion and beauty, capturing the theme of hope and restoration. The partnering salons and school included:
- James Alan Salon & Spa
- Lisa Power Salon
- The Cove Salon
- Swanq Style Studio
- Summit Salon Academy Tacoma
- Vasuda Salon
- TVS (a collection of stylists from 7 Salon)
- Coupe Rokei Salon
- Charbon Salon
- Robert Leonard Salon and Day Spa
- Elle Marie Hair Studio
- Daniel Ross Salon & Skin Care
- The Collage Salon
- Obadiah Salon
The evening also featured a silent auction. Money raised will be used to continue to teach cosmetology skills to young survivors of sex trafficking in the Foundation’s new vocational training program at the Kate Korpi Salon in Cambodia, which opened in July 2014. The Justice and Soul Foundation will also use proceeds to expand its work domestically, with an initial focus on fighting sex trafficking in the Puget Sound area.
“We are thrilled to have built on the success of the last two events, having exceeded our fundraising goal again. We are incredibly grateful for the support of our partners, models, amazing stylists and those who donated. We will continue to build on existing efforts in Cambodia, and are expanding our focus to the Puget Sound area, which is where we started, developing vocational support for our own local survivors,” said Justice and Soul Foundation Co-Founder Matthew Fairfax.
What started as an idea discussed over a cup of coffee five years ago blossomed into a full day of salon “practice” appointments for the soft opening of the Kate Korpi Salon in July 2014. Since then, the Kate Korpi Salon has become Cambodia’s premier hair salon, where students learn cosmetology and professional workplace skills from expert trainers and volunteers from around the globe.
The teaching salon was established to provide its students with the fundamentals of cosmetology (hair, skin, nails, and makeup). Students attending the school include survivors of sex trafficking and those at risk for sexual exploitation. The students do not pay tuition, but are instead awarded scholarships. The program also includes a compensation plan for the students so that they can begin experiencing sustainable financial independence while learning this valuable trade.
The Justice and Soul Foundation works closely with local non-profits to ensure students have access to qualified therapists to address the trauma they have experienced. The Foundation also provides problem-solving and life skills necessary for independent living and reintegration.
The Justice and Soul Foundation is a non-profit organization focused on eliminating the sexual exploitation of young women, men, and children globally as well as the restoration of the survivors. Through the founders’ shared connections to the salon and fashion industry, and after several years of research, planning and interviews, they are enlisting the support of the beauty industry to create a sustainable solution for the restoration of young survivors.

The annual award will honor the visionary co-founder of Aromatherapy Associates.
The International SPA Association (ISPA) will present the 2016 ISPA Visionary Award in memory of Geraldine Howard at the 26th annual ISPA Conference & Expo at The Venetian in Las Vegas, Nev. from Sept. 13 – 15, 2016. The ISPA Visionary Award is presented each year to someone in the spa industry who has made significant contributions to both the definition and positive movement of health and wellness over the lifetime of their career. The award will be accepted on stage by Howard’s husband, Captain Peter Redman.
Co-founder of Aromatherapy Associates, Howard first got her start in aromatherapy in 1973, when she joined Micheline Arcier’s renowned aromatherapy clinic in Knightsbridge, London, where she met Sue Beechey. Together, Beechey and Howard founded Aromatherapy Associates in 1985 and turned their home-grown brand into an international success in the spa community. Howard passed away earlier this year after a long battle with cancer.
“Geraldine was the epitome of a trailblazer for the world of aromatherapy,” said ISPA President Lynne McNees. “She was a part of our spa family and we are so honored to be able to celebrate her life and the impact she made on the community.”
"It was always Geraldine’s mission to tell the world how incredible essential oils are, and she saw Aromatherapy Associates as more than a business; it was her way of life. Most recently, in response to her own health challenges, she blended an oil called Inner Strength, helping to raise tens of thousands of pounds for innovative new cancer research. Such is testament to Geraldine that even in the midst of her personal struggle, she found a way to help other people," said Aromatherapy Associates in a recent statement.
Throughout the years, the spa industry has been deeply impacted by the loss of fellow colleagues and friends, including several spa industry leaders who lost their battle in 2016. In honor of all those affected by these losses, a donation on behalf of the ISPA community will be made to the Stand Up to Cancer organization to support collaborative cancer research programs.
More information about attending the 2016 ISPA Conference & Expo can be found at attendISPA.com.
