Recently, the Global Spa & Wellness Summit announced that its eighth annual summit will take place on Wednesday, September 10 through Friday, September 12, 2014 at the Four Seasons Resort Marrakech in Morocco. Hosted and co-organized by the Moroccan Agency for Tourism Development, the prestigious event is expected to attract a record number of attendees.
In addition, the second annual Global Wellness Tourism Congress will be held September 10, 2014. This event brings together ministers of tourism and thought-leaders to analyze current market conditions and develop new strategies to further develop wellness tourism. According to a recently released Global Spa & Wellness Summit study, wellness tourism is a (US) $439 billion market, representing one in seven tourism dollars.
According to CEO, SMIT, Imad Barrakad, “Business, health and wellness are among the six structuring programs of the Moroccan Strategic Vision for Tourism Development 2020. By developing the wellness and spa niche, we are targeting Morocco as an international destination for wellness via the promotion of new wellness and relaxation concepts that are based on an ecological approach that takes advantage of Moroccan’s local riches. Holding the 2014 Global Spa & Wellness Summit in Marrakech is an opportunity for Morocco to introduce the richness and potential of the country for spa and wellness.”

Tony Cuccio took a trip to San Jose, Costa Rica in December to motivate and inspire more than 600 people. A combination of nail technicians and those interested in beauty industry careers listened as Cuccio gave in-depth information about the status of the industry and the methods they should be using to make more money with their services through add-ons and retail.
“In a country where the average annual salary is $4,000, the turnout was tremendous and shows me that the desire to learn and earn is there,” said Cuccio. “And that’s one of the reasons I continue to do these seminars. The potential to make money in this industry is limited only by lack of knowledge. I’d like to help change that as it benefits all of us on a larger scale. People need resources for success, and I help point them in the right direction through my experiences.”

Congratulations to Karen Houshultz, owner of Apple Day Spa & Salon in Honesdale, Pennsylvania! Karen is the winner of DAYSPA’s Miraval Getaway Contest, and will receive a fabulous three-night stay for two at the amazing Miraval Resort & Spa in Tucson, Arizona. For the contest, which ran in October and November, 2013, we asked entrants to tell us what their spa does to foster wellness for their staff, clients and community, and we were wowed by Karen’s response:

Each month we focus on different aspects of wellness including morning stretch, yoga and daily walking for staff. We host informative seminars for staff and spa guests ranging from sleep deprivation, stress reduction, menopause, and anti aging remedies to name a few. We have guest speakers as well as educated technicians teaching. We can be spotted at our local grade school teaching elementary students about melanoma awareness through fun, interactive activities. For the past 5 years we have aligned with our local YMCA with a Biggest Loser contest. We offer medical wigs and are partnered with Recover With Confidence; visiting hospitals and oncology offices and offering FREE mini services to patients. We are also certified with the Look Good Feel Better Program. At Apple Day Spa we have an array of progressive and healthful services to offer our guests, including traditional spa services as well as shirodhara, an infrared sauna, hydrotherapy services and nutritional counseling. To put it simply...we're health and wellness obsessed.”
DAYSPA executive editor Linda Kossoff called Karen to break the big news. “I was so excited when I heard that I won the Miraval Getaway prize. I love DAYSPA magazine and read it every month—I implement a lot of the ideas from the magazine and also try to enter some of the contests,” says Karen. “This essay contest appealed to me because we work so hard at Apple Day Spa to promote wellness to the staff, our clients and the community. We are an education-based facility and even though we are in a small community we do our best to stay at the forefront of our industry. Education, customer service, community involvement and teamwork are our top priorities!”
And what does this hard-working spa owner look forward to most once she gets to Tucson?
“I am so excited to soak up the warm Arizona weather as well as the beautiful scenery!” she says. “I can’t wait to enjoy all the amenities of Miraval—I've already started to make a list of the treatments I would like to try. Just checking out the spa on their website has got me excited to go...what an amazing facility!” As luck would have it, Karen also has some family in the area so she plans to extend her vacation to include a visit with them.

In an ongoing effort to ensure that every nail tech in the country knows the Cuccio name, educator Marilyn Garcia led her team in teaching attendees at the San Juan Beauty Show about Cuccio Veneer, Cuccio Colour and Cuccio Naturale. Held in November, the largest show in Puerto Rico attracted record numbers of attendees and exhibitors. In addition to offering products at show prices, the team was there doing demos and on hand to answer all questions from interested beauty professionals.
According to Garcia, “We have a wonderful team of educators that are working with me to get the Cuccio name out there. Step by step we will continue our hard work so that everyone in Puerto Rico understands the benefits of working with Cuccio.”
In addition to participating in trade shows and classes, Garcia also works with designers during San Juan Moda (fashion week). All nails for designer Miriam Budet’s collection shown in October were done by Garcia and her team using Cuccio Colour and Veneer.
