After increasing in the fourth quarter of 2013, the Professional Beauty Association's (PBA) Salon/Spa Performance Index (SSPI) declined slightly 0.8 percent in the first quarter of 2014, declining to its lowest level in a year. Softer sales and customer traffic contributed to the decrease. Furthermore, the Current Situation Index fell by 1.4 percent to 100.3, while the Expectations Index decreased by 0.3 percent to 104.6.
The SSPI is a quarterly composite index that tracks the health and outlook of the U.S. salon/spa industry. The SSPI is based on responses to PBA's "Salon/Spa Industry Tracking Survey," which is fielded quarterly among salon/spa owners nationwide on a variety of indicators. It is constructed to measure the health of the salon/spa industry in relation to a steady-state level of 100. Index values above 100 indicate that key industry indicators are in a period of expansion, while index values below 100 represent a period of contraction. The Index consists of two components: the Current Situation Index and the Expectations Index.
"The professional salon/spa industry remains resilient despite this first quarter decline. Overall indicators and feedback from beauty professionals across the country continue to be positive, and we hope to see additional growth in the near future," said Executive Director of PBA, Steve Sleeper.
The Current Situation Index, which measures current trends in five industry indicators (service sales, retail sales, customer traffic, employees/hours and capital expenditures), stood at 100.3 percent, down 1.4 percent from the fourth quarter. Despite the decline, the Current Situation Index has remained above 100 for the sixth consecutive quarter, which marks expansion in the industry indicators.
Service sales, customer traffic levels, and capital spending in the first quarter of 2014 were slightly weaker than last quarter. Only 50 percent of salon/spa owners reported an increase in same-store service sales between the first quarters of 2013 and 2014. Similarly, only 31 percent of spa and salon owners reported an increase in retail sales, below the 52 percent reported in the fourth quarter of 2013. In contrast, spa and salon owners reported a slight increase in staffing levels in the first quarter. While this area did not post concerning results, it countered the decreased indicators.
The Expectations Index, which measures salon/spa owners' six-month outlook on five industry indicators (service sales, retail sales, employees and hours, capital expenditures and business conditions) slightly decreased as well in the first quarter of 2014 to 104.6, down 0.3 percent. However, like the Current Situation Index, the Expectations Index continues to remain above 100, which indicates that salon/spa owners are optimistic about growth in the coming months.
Salon/spa owners were most positive on growth relating to service sales, retail sales and the general direction of the economy. Sixty-seven percent of spa and salon owners expect to have higher service sales within the next six months. Similarly, 56 percent of spa and salon owners plan to make a capital expenditure for equipment, expansion or remodeling in the next six months, up from 54 percent last quarter and the highest level in 13 quarters.
SPADA Salon & Day Spa achieved record-breaking results at its fifth annual SPADA-thon raising $22,700 to split between two local charities, PACE Center for Girls of Lee County and the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. More than 350 attendees enjoyed discounted haircuts and spa services, bid in the silent auction and shopped merchandise offered by fashion vendors.
The event also served as the kick-off to PACE’s summer LOVE THAT DRESS! collection campaign, collecting nearly 400 dresses, handbags and accessories donated by SPADA-thon guests. The new and gently worn items will be offered for nominal prices at Love That Dress!, the ultimate shopping spree fundraiser for PACE Lee scheduled for August 27, 2014 in Estero.

We were saddened to hear that one of our favorite London hangouts, the Sanctuary Spa, is closing its doors for good tomorrow, May 31st, as a result of the redevelopment of the area and the rising costs associated with being in a listed (historic) building.
The iconic women-only day spa, located on a cobblestone street in Covent Garden, was founded in 1977 by choreographer Gary Cockerill as a gift for his ballerina wife. Cockerill envisaged the facility as a place where dancers from the nearby Royal Opera House would come to restore their weary bodies. He also saw it as a spiritual sanctuary: a women-only spa where spa-goers could unwind among friends.
With its sprawling layout, encompassing the famous Koi Carp pool, a hammam, two swimming pools and relaxation lounges, the spa attracted harried Londoners, out-of-towners and tourists, in addition to celebrities. It even made an appearance in Joan Collins’ racy movie, The Stud, in 1978!
As well as being a place to relax and indulge (champagne, anyone?), the spa also offered facials, therapeutic massages and other beauty rituals. A line of Sanctuary-branded products was launched in 1998, and is still going strong.
According to spa director Catherine Ferma, “The Sanctuary Spa in Covent Garden has been the UK’s most-loved iconic day spa since it opened over 35 years ago. Renowned as a haven for rest and relaxation to the 60,000 women that have visited each year, we are proud of the spa’s authentic heritage of love and the loyalty that the brand has received over the years. [The closing] was a difficult decision to make, but our strategy moving forward is to focus on product."

The International SPA Association (ISPA) recently announced that singer/songwriter Jewel will be the recipient of the 2014 ISPA Alex Szekely Humanitarian Award. This award will be presented at the 24th annual ISPA Conference & Expo to be held at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. from Oct. 13-15, 2014.
“ISPA is thrilled to recognize Jewel for her philanthropy work,” said ISPA President Lynne McNees. “Jewel has such a passion for giving and music, we are excited to hear her inspirational stories and songs as our keynote speaker this year.”
The award is named in honor of the late spa pioneer, Alex Szekely. It is designed to recognize an individual who acts as a respected contributor to overall well-being, encouraging the renewal of mind, body and spirit - all of which are characteristics embodied by ISPA members worldwide.
“I feel an affinity for Jewel and her upbringing in the Alaskan wilderness, where she was the granddaughter of homesteaders and her parents lived far from town with no running water and no heat. I experienced a similar childhood in Tahiti,” said Deborah Szekely, mother of Alex Szekely. “I believe in resilience, for it gives you the strength to give back. Jewel is an enormous talent, and her songs and actions run deep with the compassion she has for others.”
Jewel was chosen by the ISPA Board of Directors based on her extensive work for her charity Project Clean Water, which raises funds and awareness for global access to clean water. Project Clean Water was inspired by Jewel’s personal experience with homelessness as a teenager.
Past Humanitarian Award recipients include Blake Mycoskie, founder and chief shoe giver of TOMS, journalist Lisa Ling and Dr. Maya Angelou.

The International SPA Association (ISPA) announced Erik Wahl, Mike Walsh, and Jewel will headline the 24th annual ISPA Conference & Expo to be held at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev. from October 13-15, 2014.
“With the CREATE theme, our keynote speakers will be looking at ways to explore creativity in the spa industry in order to improve the overall guest experience and maximize profitability,” said ISPA President Lynne McNees.
The ISPA Conference & Expo will kick off with Erik Wahl speaking Monday, October 13. An internationally recognized graffiti artist, author and entrepreneur, Wahl will focus on profitability through innovations all the while bringing it to life on canvas.
Mike Walsh, a futurist who focuses on creating a blueprint for your business in the 21st Century, will present on Tuesday, October 14. As a global nomad and consumer trend scout, Mike does live research, in the trenches, with big corporations and entrepreneurs all over the world and prepares business leaders for what's next.
Jewel is a renowned singer, songwriter, artist and philanthropist. To date she has sold 27 million albums, most notably Perfectly Clear in June 2008. Inspired by her own personal experience with homelessness as a teenager, Jewel founded her charitable initiative, Project CleanWater, in 1997 which raises funds and awareness for global access to clean water. Jewel will close out the Conference on Wednesday, October 15, by sharing her story through song and speech.

In addition to the Mavs, Cuban is chairman and CEO of AXS TV, one of ABC's "Sharks" on the hit show Shark Tank, and an investor in an ever-growing portfolio of businesses. He lives in Dallas with wife Tiffany, daughters Alexis and Alyssa, and son Jake.
