Dermalogica, in conjunction with The International Dermal Institute (IDI) recently named Carson, CA-based team member Heather Hickman as the new Senior Director of U.S. Education for the companies. The promotion reflects a powerful fusion of professional products and professional treatment originally conceptualized by company co-founder, Jane Wurwand.
In her new position serving both Dermalogica and IDI, Hickman is responsible for 101 employees, including 65 instructors. For the past three years, Hickman has overseen the education for all IDI instructors, managed the operations for all 17 IDI training centers across the U.S., and ensured that all training centers meet their class student registration and retail sales goals. Hickman’s most recent accomplishment is her integral role in the development and launch of Dermalogica’s first two hybrid immersive Learning Centers in Scottsdale, AZ and Atlanta, GA. These centers offer skin care professionals the most advanced curricula in the professional industry while simultaneously striving to make skin health more accessible than ever to the consumer by offering a full retail space and treatment services.
Tracey Sameyah, U.S. General Manager for Dermalogica, comments “Professionalism, passion and vision are what have defined our brand in this industry from the beginning, and this has been possible only because of team-members like Heather Hickman. We feel especially fortunate to have Heather on the front lines as one of the leaders who pioneers our new hybrid learning center concept and continues to push our education forward so that it is relevant to tomorrow’s professional skin therapist.”
Says Hickman, “Dermalogica has always set the gold standard in professional skin care… and it has truly been an honor to work for a company that understands and supports the professional skin therapist. The new Learning Centers fully culminate all of Dermalogica’s assets, and I’m really excited to optimize the advanced education of skin therapists by offering our curricula in these immersive settings.”
Hickman, who was born and raised in the UK, began her journey with Dermalogica and The International Dermal Institute more than 13 years ago as a licensed skin therapist and educator.

Recently, the Global Spa & Wellness Summit announced that its eighth annual summit will take place on Wednesday, September 10 through Friday, September 12, 2014 at the Four Seasons Resort Marrakech in Morocco. Hosted and co-organized by the Moroccan Agency for Tourism Development, the prestigious event is expected to attract a record number of attendees.
In addition, the second annual Global Wellness Tourism Congress will be held September 10, 2014. This event brings together ministers of tourism and thought-leaders to analyze current market conditions and develop new strategies to further develop wellness tourism. According to a recently released Global Spa & Wellness Summit study, wellness tourism is a (US) $439 billion market, representing one in seven tourism dollars.
According to CEO, SMIT, Imad Barrakad, “Business, health and wellness are among the six structuring programs of the Moroccan Strategic Vision for Tourism Development 2020. By developing the wellness and spa niche, we are targeting Morocco as an international destination for wellness via the promotion of new wellness and relaxation concepts that are based on an ecological approach that takes advantage of Moroccan’s local riches. Holding the 2014 Global Spa & Wellness Summit in Marrakech is an opportunity for Morocco to introduce the richness and potential of the country for spa and wellness.”
Furthermore, Global Spa & Wellness Chairman and CEO Susie Ellis noted, “Morocco is a splendid setting for the 2014 Summit. It has a rich history as a wellbeing destination with an age-old tradition of beauty, relaxation and body care. The Moroccan hammam, argan oil and the amazing new anti-aging Barbary fig seed oil are just some of the contributions the country has made to spa and wellness worldwide. Equally impressive is the country's commitment to, and investment in, wellness tourism.”

Dedicated to raising the bar in professional education as well as consumer intelligence in every area of skin care, Diana Howard, Ph.D., Vice President of Global Education and Research and Development for The International Dermal Institute (IDI) and Dermalogica will offer an eye-opening multi-media presentation on Monday, February 3, 2014 from 6pm to 8pm titled, “New Fact, More Fiction, Latest Fantasy – Part 2”.
The event is a Guest Speaker Evening (GSE), part of the year-long series of GSEs hosted across the USA by IDI. Dr. Howard will speak at IDI’s world-headquarters located in Carson, CA, and the message will be transmitted globally via a live webcast on IDI’s Facebook page. Viewing parties with refreshments are also being hosted at all 17 IDI locations, topped off by a live Q+A following the event.
Dr. Howard comments, “It’s human nature to be attracted to the next, newest, shiny thing, and professional skin therapists are no exception. Everyone in the business is looking for the Holy Grail, the silver bullet, especially when it comes to anti-aging. As a result, there are a lot of seductive promises, pseudo-science and misinformation that consumers find. As the leading world authority on ingredient formulation and technology, here at IDI we feel that it is our responsibility to offer skin therapists our latest assessment of what’s real and what’s just a manufacturer’s marketing ploy. Knowing the facts is the only way that professionals can manage the expectations of their customers, provide effective treatments, and correctly prescribe products for at-home use.”
Dr. Howard points out that virtually every week, “…a new mystery-fruit from the Amazon or some laboratory synthesized active ingredient is being touted all over the internet as the guarantee to reverse aging. Too often buzzwords that have legitimate science behind them are taken out of context and used to promote high tech skin care. Unless you are a scientist it may be difficult to decipher what is real science or marketing hype. ”
To attend the event, please call 1.888.29.CLASS (25277) or visit www.facebook.com/dermalinstitute to watch the live webcast. For more information on The International Dermal Institute and the GSE series, please visit www.dermalinstitute.com.
Tony Cuccio took a trip to San Jose, Costa Rica in December to motivate and inspire more than 600 people. A combination of nail technicians and those interested in beauty industry careers listened as Cuccio gave in-depth information about the status of the industry and the methods they should be using to make more money with their services through add-ons and retail.
“In a country where the average annual salary is $4,000, the turnout was tremendous and shows me that the desire to learn and earn is there,” said Cuccio. “And that’s one of the reasons I continue to do these seminars. The potential to make money in this industry is limited only by lack of knowledge. I’d like to help change that as it benefits all of us on a larger scale. People need resources for success, and I help point them in the right direction through my experiences.”
