Over 135 people from all over the world attended The Repêchage 17th Annual International Conference in NYC on May 18, 2015.
Repêchage CEO and Founder Lydia Sarfati welcomed over 135 skincare and spa professionals from across the country as well as from Korea, Trinidad, the Dominican Republic, Romania, the United Kingdom, Italy and Curacao. Guests gathered at this year’s NYC Conference to hear both science and medical experts speak, as well as to be part of the launch of the new Repêchage Hydra 4 Red‐OutTM Facial and at‐home products, the Repêchage Mineral Face Shield, and annual Repêchage President’s Awards.
To kick off the event, Charles Yarish, Ph.D., professor at the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Connecticut, took the podium to present “The Science of Seaweed.” Yarish was recently appointed to the Repêchage Board of Directors for 2015, and heads one of the leading seaweed science laboratories in the world dedicated to seaweed research and aquaculture. Dr. Yarish shared with guests the many different facets of seaweed – from cultivation to its use, food, fertilizers and most relevant to Conference guests: cosmetics. Dr. Yarish specifically delineated the anti‐wrinkling, anti‐aging and skin regeneration characteristics of specific seaweeds, including Laminaria Digitata and Ascophyllum Nodosum, the two seaweeds predominantly used in Repêchage Professional Skin Care.
Next to take the podium was Karl Richter, partner of Bio‐Gate AG, Germany, for his presentation “Micro Silver: A Newly Patented Ingredient for Dermatological Skin Care.” Richter presented information on Micro Silver, a new found ingredient that Repêchage will be utilizing in the new Repêchage Red‐Out Facial and at‐home products. Specifically, Richter spoke on the science behind Micro Silver and its benefits in skincare and cosmetics, including its antimicrobial action and ability to fight harmful bacteria that can cause inflammation, skin irritations and blemishes. Repêchage will be the first professional skin care company in the United States to utilize this new ingredient in Repêchage Hydra 4 Red‐Out Facial with Micro Silver and Anti‐Oxidants and at‐home products for hypersensitive skin and rosacea.
Before the official introduction of Repêchage Red‐Out, Dr. Samuel Shatkin, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery and owner of the Aesthetic Associate Centre for Plastic Surgery and Advanced Medical Skin Care in Buffalo, took the stage. In his presentation, “Rosacea – Causes and Solutions,” Dr. Shatkin discussed the medical findings of what causes this skin condition and solutions for those who suffer from rosacea – a skin condition seen in 16 million people in the US and 45 million people worldwide, according to the Rosacea Society. Dr. Shatkin also reported on his recent clinical study of rosacea patients in his Buffalo, NY practice, revealing dramatic reduction of rosacea symptoms in before and after photographs.
Immediately following was the official premiere of Repêchage Hydra 4 Red‐Out for event attendees, along with the debut of Repêchage Mineral Face Shield. After a brief break, Dr. Patrick Fratellone took the stage for “The Heart & the Whole Body Connection.” Fratellone presented to guests his insights as a well‐known cardiologist and internist who practices integrative medicine. Dr. Fratellone explained the benefits of a well‐balanced life that included exercise, mediation and good self‐esteem while eliminating unhealthy food choices.
For the last portion of the event, Lydia Sarfati presented the President’s Awards, given in various categories to an establishment or person that demonstrates esthetic excellence as well as dedication to the elevation of the industry.
Dr. Samuel Shatkin and Joni Shatkin of Trés Auraé Spa in Buffalo, NY were awarded the Trendsetter of the Year award.
The following day, on May 19, 2015, attendees gathered at the Repêchage Headquarters in Secaucus, NJ for a Hands‐On Workshop. Under the instruction of Repêchage Global Education Leader, Lauren Streeter and Corporate Educator, Natalie Otto, guests spent a full day learning further about rosacea and hypersensitive skin treatment with the new Repêchage Hydra 4® Red‐Out Facial and at‐home products.

Alice Waters will receive the 2015 ISPA Alex Szekely Humanitarian Award at the 2015 ISPA Conference & Expo from October 19-21, 2015 in Las Vegas, NV
The International SPA Association (ISPA) will present Alice Waters with the 2015 ISPA Alex Szekely Humanitarian Award at the 25th annual ISPA Conference & Expo at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, NV from October 19-21, 2015.
Waters is a chef, author, food activist and owner of Chez Panisse. Waters has been a champion of local, sustainable agriculture for more than four decades.
“ISPA is thrilled to recognize Alice for her many years of hard work in advocating for locally grown fare,” said ISPA President Lynne McNees. “Alice’s passion for feeding the world is so inspiring and her work impacts so many of us.”
Waters was chosen based on her extensive work as founder of The Edible Schoolyard Project, an innovative model for public education that integrates the growing and cooking of food into the core academic curriculum. The centerpiece of the mission is to promote a free, nutritious and sustainable school lunch for all students, K – 12, and to bring children into a new relationship to food.
Waters’ vision for edible education began 20 years ago with The Edible Schoolyard at Berkeley’s Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, which today draws visitors from around the world. The online Edible Schoolyard Network gathers and shares lessons and best practices from school gardens, kitchens, and edible education programs worldwide. To date, there are more than 4,000 Edible Schoolyard Network member programs in 54 countries.
“I am so honored to be receiving this award for the 25th anniversary of ISPA,” said Waters. “I am looking forward to speaking at this important gathering.”
The award is named in honor of the late spa pioneer, Alex Szekely. It is designed to recognize an individual who acts as a respected contributor to overall well-being, encouraging the renewal of mind, body and spirit - all of which are characteristics embodied by ISPA members worldwide.
The award will be presented to Waters by Szekely’s mother, Deborah Szekely. Following will be a keynote presentation from Wednesday's keynote speaker.
"Alice Waters has climbed to the summit of worldwide culinary fame since starting Chez Panisse in a little house on Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley,” said Szekely. “Along the way she's done more than any single person to change the world of healthy, sustainable, immensely enjoyable dining as well as cooking at home. She also inspires many thousands of children each year through her Edible Schoolyard project to honor fresh and seasonal, locally sourced, honest simple food and all that it means to lifelong health. I am so proud to be able to call her my friend."

China Glaze joined Wish Upon a Teen to brighten the day for teens battling cancer.
It just takes a smile, like the one in the photo above, to make one realize the impact a day of beauty can have. On April 27th at the Sonya Dakar Skin Clinic in Beverly Hills, twelve girls were treated to a day of pampering organized by Wish Upon a Teen, a non-profit dedicated to helping teens fighting cancer. During the fourth annual Spa Day, the teenagers, who are oncology patients of the Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA, received luxurious mini spa treatments with manicures by China Glaze, facials by the Sonya Dakar team and makeup application by Stila.
China Glaze celebrity manicurists Stephanie Stone and Brittni Rae from Nailing Hollywood created custom nail art looks using summer’s brightest hues. The teens selected their favorite polishes from China Glaze’s 2015 spring and summer collections, as well as an assortment of China Glaze’s best selling shades to create a look all their own. Each design was topped off with Fast Forward dry fast top coat for long-lasting shine and durability.
In addition to enjoying a day of pampering, the teens also spent time with celebrities Austin Stowell (Whiplash), Haley Pullos (General Hospital), Halston Sage (Crisis) and singer/songwriter Cailee Rae.

Successful Hands School Grant Awarded at the 4th Annual American Massage Conference (AMC) School Rally
The Successful Hands Grant Program supports professional massage therapy students and schools through a collaborative effort with Biofreeze, Massage Envy Spa and Bon Vital.
Cortiva Institute instructor Dianna Lynn Jungels was awarded a $750 Successful Hands grant package at the American Massage Conference School Rally on May 1 at Massage Warehouse’s headquarters in Bolingbrook, IL. The Successful Hands Grant Program™, launched through the collaborative efforts of Biofreeze®, Massage Envy Spa® and Bon Vital'®, supports the professional massage therapy student and their schools. ONE Concept, the conference organizer, partnered with Biofreeze, Massage Envy Spa and Bon Vital' to promote the grant program during the conference.

NovaLash Founder Helps Bring Awareness to Lyme Disease with 2015 Lyme Disease Challenge
For years, Sophy Merszei, Molecular Biologist, Cosmetic Chemist and founder of NovaLash, has been suffering from Lyme Disease and its attendant disorders. Now she is putting the pain aside, and spreading awareness about a little understood disease that affects millions by sharing her story and taking part in the 2015 Lyme Disease Challenge.
“You may know me as the person who introduced eyelash extensions to the world, but you might not know that I have been battling Lyme Disease, Chronic Erlichiosis and Babesiosis for 30 years,” says Merszei. “I didn't get tested early, as a child, because even the best doctors didn't have the right information back then. Still today, most doctors, including my husband, are being taught outdated information on Lyme Disease.
“Yolanda Foster from The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills has been such an inspiration to me by sharing sick photos of herself alongside photos of herself when she is feeling healthy. She has inspired me to come out of my little ‘Lyme Closet’ and share photos of myself that I was previously embarrassed and ashamed of. If I can help one child get diagnosed early, it's well worth sharing my ugly picture," adds Merszei.

On Monday, May 4, the Guinness World Record for the most people getting facials simultaneously was broken in Jinan, China.
One thousand people gathered in a football stadium to receive a 30 minute facial, earning the new world record. Anthony Yodice, a spokesperson for Guinness World Records, confirmed that the mass facial beat the previous 2014 record set in India of 287 people receiving facials at the same time.

Last month, Cuccio educator Marilyn Garcia visited north of the border to launch the T3 LED Gel to more than 60 attendees in conjunction with Summum Beaute, Cuccio’s exclusive distributor in Quebec. The one-day event, held at the ALT Hotel in Brossard, covered a variety of techniques and design work with the T3 LED Gel, pink and whites, 3D design and Cuccio Colour Veneer. The attendees received certificates upon completion and left with a better understanding of how to use the latest technologies in nails to create length.
