The International Dermal Institute (IDI) and the Institute of Integrative Oncology (iiO) partner to offer two informative courses for skin therapists.
The International Dermal Institute (IDI) and the Institute of Integrative Oncology (iiO), a continuing education approved provider, have partnered to offer two classes held exclusively at IDI locations. The classes were developed by the iiO in response to spa professionals who wanted to safely serve the needs of people going through or recovering from cancer treatments.
“Cancer Aware: Client Safety and Lymphedema” is a hands-on two-day class which will teach skin therapists how to safely provide skin care treatments for client’s with a history of cancer treatment who have, or are at risk of developing lymphedema. Lymphedema, swelling of the arms and legs, is a costly, uncomfortable, and disfiguring long-term side effect of many cancer treatments that affects many survivors. It can develop during, immediately after, or even decades after cancer treatment is complete and can be triggered by incorrectly provided skin care treatments and massage applications.
This class will help skin therapists recognize which cancer treatments can cause lymphedema, perform safe skin treatment protocols for clients with or at risk of lymphedema and understand how to communicate this important safety information to their community and increase client base. “Cancer Aware: Client Safety and Lymphedema” will be offered at IDI Los Angeles on October 8-9, 2015 for $220.00. Skin therapists will also receive a certification of completion.
The second class being offered is “Skincare for Oncology Clients,” which introduces skin therapists to the unique and changing needs of this clientele and helps equip these practitioners with the skill and knowledge to provide safe, therapeutic treatments for people in or with a history of cancer treatment.
This three-day training class will explain how cancer starts and spreads, recognize the primary clinical considerations in providing skin care and massage treatments for people in or with a history of cancer, as well as how to make informed choices regarding ingredient and product selection. In addition, skin therapists will identify and work with acupressure points in addressing common cancer treatment-related side effects and evaluating site and pressure modifications that pertain to side effects caused by medical devices, surgical procedures and drug treatments. On the third day, skin therapists will perform a therapeutic oncology skin treatment on someone in or with a history of cancer treatment. Class will be offered at IDI Philadelphia on October 15-17, 2015 and IDI Los Angeles on November 5-7, 2015 for $450.00. Skin therapists will also receive a certification of completion.

Spa News: Whitney Lowe, LMT Receives Performance Health/Massage Therapy Foundation 2015 Humanitarian Award
Lowe was honored for his efforts in embracing the power of massage and the mission of the Massage Therapy Foundation to promote education and research while serving others.
Whitney Lowe, LMT was recently presented the 2015 Performance Health/Massage Therapy Foundation Humanitarian Award at this year’s American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) National Convention held in Pittsburgh, PA in August.

In addition to the many scholarly books, Mr. Lowe is routinely featured as an author in several professional journals and magazines.

DeLany was recognized for her dedication and commitment to the massage profession and the American Massage Therapy Association.
Performance Health recently announced that Judith DeLany, LMT has been recognized by the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) for her dedication and commitment to the massage profession and the American Massage Therapy Association. Ms. DeLany is a long-time supporter of and educator for Performance Health. Ms. DeLany received the AMTA's National Distinguished Service Award at the American Massage Therapy Association National Convention held in Pittsburgh, PA in August.
The award is selected by the AMTA’s National President, Jeff Smoot, and approved by its Executive Committee. Its purpose is to openly honor individuals who have contributed to the massage profession in an outstanding manner and to acknowledge diligent volunteerism done in an altruistic manner.

As an internationally recognized speaker on such topics as chronic pain and myofascial dysfunction, Ms. DeLany has served as a presenter and/or keynote speaker at numerous conventions and conferences in various fields of medicine. She is a published author and currently serves as Associate Editor for Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies in addition to being a contributing writer to numerous publications.

Nonprofit organization Polished Girlz hosts prom-style event for children and teens.
Fifteen-year-old founder Alanna Wall’s dream of creating a prom for patients who may not otherwise get the chance to experience one recently came true. The first annual Polished Girlz Ball was held Monday, September 14th at St. Mary’s Hospital for Children in Bayside, NY. Approximately 40 patients experienced the pure joy of turning into princes and princesses, complete with donated bow ties, dresses and crowns and some special celebrity faces, including Arzo Anwar from Bravo TV’s Blood, Sweat & Tears; and Nia Sioux Frazier from Lifetime TV’s Dance Moms.
A royal court of the nail industry was on hand to give back, including essie’s Gino Trunzo as the fairy godfather, and The Painted Nail’s Katie Cazorla as the fairy godmother. Azature provided Wall with a diamond crown valued at $17 million as well as other jewelry she wore for the ball. Other notables included celebrity manicurists Mr. Luis Nails and Mar y Sol Inzerillo. KB Shimmer was the key sponsor for the event and many industry brands, including Orly International, Sephora and NBC Universal, partnered with the nonprofit for the event.
The girls, once in their chosen dresses and crowns, chose their favorite polishes and got manicures prior to the ball, while the boys were given their bow ties. Everyone walked the red carpet and spent the afternoon dancing to the tunes DJ Remo was playing. Other activities included a photo booth and a nail art station. Cupcakes and lemonade were provided for all and everyone left with a goodie bag that marked the occasion.

The International SPA Association (ISPA) released its annual findings of spa industry financial indicators, reporting the industry continues to grow as it surpassed the $15 billion mark.
In its recent report on what is known as "The Big Five" - total revenue, spa visits, spa locations, revenue per visit and number of employees for the United States spa industry - The International SPA Association (ISPA) has announced that as of 2014, total revenue within the spa industry surpassed the $15 billion mark, up from $14.7 billion in 2013 to $15.5 billion in 2014 (5.3 percent increase).
“It is always an exciting time to reveal the Big Five, as these numbers are strong indicators of the future success and growth of the spa industry. As ISPA celebrates its 25th anniversary, we are proud to report this milestone for the spa industry,” said ISPA President Lynne McNees.
The increase in spa revenues was driven by strong growth in the number of spa visits, estimated to have increased to a record high of 176 million in 2014, up from 164 million in 2013 (6.7 percent increase). As the increase in visits outpaced the rise in spa revenues, there was a slight decline in average revenue per visit, from $89 in 2013 to $88 in 2014 (1.3 percent decrease).
The total number of spa locations rose from 20,180 in 2013 to 20,660 in 2014 (2.4 percent increase). Total employment is estimated to have risen to 360,000 as of May 2015, an increase of more than 10,000 on the May 2014 position (2.9 percent increase).
PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) was commissioned to conduct the study by the ISPA Foundation. "This year's study highlights the strong performance in total revenue and number of spa visits. The growth in these areas shows the US spa industry is buoyant and building on the momentum established in the previous year,” said Colin McIlheney, global research director for PwC.
The complete study will be released in late September 2015.
