Green Tip of the Month

Sustainable Sincerity

Our upcoming Green Scene ("Mayan Marvel," September 2010) contains helpful tips on how to detect greenwashing when perusing "organic" product labels. That's when companies try to unjustifiably tout a product's environmental virtues.

As John Vater, co-ower of Spa Adriana in Huntington, New York, warns, "The big print giveth and the small print taketh away."

Here's some information about avoiding this pitfall:

  • Read labels with a discriminating eye.
John and his wife, co-owner Adriana Vater, caution spa professionals against taking a product label at face value. "If the packaging claims it doesn't contain something, you should ask yourself what's there to do that ingredient's job," Adriana says. "Every component of a product has a purpose, and sometimes a so-called 'green' ingredient is just as offensive as the original."
  • Educate yourself.
The Vaters say it's important to develop an understanding of how product ingredients work. "With today's Internet access, you can quickly look up the chemical composition of any item," John says.

It's not always easy going green. How do you ensure that your spa's environmental initiatives result in real, positive change? Send your ideas to Katie O'Reilly, associate editor, at koreilly@creativeage.com.

Star Treatment

Island Indulgence

Your clients no longer need to travel across the Pacific Ocean to experience Hawaiian-style pampering. Southern California's Spa Gregorie’s, with locations in Newport Beach, Rancho Santa Margarita and Del Mar, gives its clients a taste of the Aloha State with its Aloha Paradise Package (115 min./$179).

Pineapple, and coconut and kukui oils infuse the scrub, massage oil and lotion used in this two-step treatment. It begins with a custom massage, followed by a full-body exfoliation and Vichy shower. It’s a tropical vacation without the jetlag.

The protocol:

1. Begin with a 60-minute customized massage using warm kukui/ coconut oil.

2. Ask the client to lie face up while you drip warm water onto her right foot and leg with a washcloth. Follow with a pineapple/papaya exfoliation. Scrub the area using vigorous circular strokes in an upward movement toward the heart. Follow the same procedure on the right arm, abdomen and décolleté. Repeat on the left side of the body.

3. Protecting the client's face, turn on the Vichy shower, and adjust the water temperature and pressure to a comfortable level. Rinse body for three to five minutes or until fully clean.

4. Ask the client to turn over and repeat the shower process.

5. Lastly, apply pineapple/papaya moisturizer to the entire body to seal in moisture and deeply hydrate the skin.
