Rocker Glam
Creative Nail Design rocked the house during two major music industry award shows. First, Creative tended to the hands of Tori Spelling, Flavor Flav, Mary J. Blige and Katharine McPhee at the 2006 American Music Awards on November 21 in Los Angeles. Then, the company treated presenters and performers to backstage pampering at the 49th annual Grammy Awards, also in Los Angeles, on February 11. Rockers John Legend and the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith went home with designer cosmetic bags filled with 50 of Creative Nail Design’s hottest nail enamel shades, as well as a complete set of hand- and footcare treatments.

Michael Coe, former CEO of Gene Juarez Salons & Spas, passed away on February 10 in Seattle after a battle with liver disease. As high school friends and longtime business partners, Coe and Gene Juarez devoted 30 years to cultivating and expanding one of the most prominent salon and spa companies in the Pacific Northwest. “Along with Gene Juarez, Michael built one of the most notable salon and spa companies in the nation ... and we hope the greatest tribute we can offer to Michael is to continue to nurture the organization he spent 30 years of his life helping to build,” says Gene Juarez Salons & Spas CEO Janet Denyer.
Coe was also heavily involved in a range of industry and community organizations: He served as president of the International Chain Salon Association and sat on the Cosmetology Advancement Foundation’s board of trustees. He’s survived by his wife of 39 years, Jayne Rucker Coe, daughter Sara Jane and son Ian Michael, mother Catherine Coe, brother Mitchel and sisters Cindy Ebberson and Sandy Bourgeois. Contributions can be sent in memory of S. Michael Coe to the University of Washington Medical Center—Liver Transplant Services, 1959 NE Pacific Street, Box 356174, Seattle, WA 98195. Donations can also be made to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center by visiting fhcrc.org/donating/donate_now.html or calling 800/279-1618.

The October 2007 Chicago Midwest Beauty Show (CMBS) has been canceled and will debut with a new format on March 3-8, 2008, that will incorporate America’s Expo for Skin Care & Spa. Show organizers plan to expand the exhibit area and esthetics education and offer the show’s attendees a broader taste of downtown Chicago, says CMBS and Cosmetologists Chicago CEO Paul Dykstra.
Consumers are invited to experience some of the best benefits of trade show events when Spa Finder hosts two open expos in 2007: Aspen Spa Day on July 28 and The Spa Experience, which will be held in New York City’s Grand Central Terminal from October 31 to November 3. Both expos will feature interactive exhibits, product demonstrations and giveaways, while some of the industry’s premier spa companies offer treatments and cuisine. “There’s really no better way to appreciate what the spa lifestyle is all about than to actually feel the massage, taste the cuisine or experience the treatment,” says Spa Finder COO Sallie Fraenkel. “We felt the timing was right to bring the spa experience to life by offering the world’s top spa companies the chance to interact directly with potential customers.”
Given With Love
Many worthy causes tug at the heartstrings of beauty professionals, and these manufacturers and day spas have found noble and effective ways to contribute to the charities they love.
• Creative Nail Design supported Dining by Design, the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS annual fundraising program that kicked off on February 24 in New York City with a celebrity-studded cocktail party. Creative donated a lavish, customized gift box filled with products.
• Dermalogica is hosting three “Ladies Lounges” in 2007 to benefit Step Up Women’s Network, a national nonprofit membership organization that benefits women and girls through community programs and resources. The first event took place at Dermalogica’s International Dermal Institute in Chicago on March 29. This was followed by an event at the Los Angeles flagship store on April 26; the final “Ladies Lounge” will take place in New York City on November 13.
• More than 60 day spas and salons across the country discounted their most popular treatments from January 15 to February 15 to raise funds for heart disease awareness. The campaign was organized through PrettyCity.com, a spa-directory website, in partnership with The Heart Truth, a national campaign to educate women about heart disease.
• Christy Vowers, owner of the Aura Salon Day Spa in Scottsdale, AZ, partnered with her local chapter of The Salon Association to host an event that raised more than $12,000 for the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. The March 4 event, “Kidz Fashion Friendz,” included a fashion show in which the models were children who have cancer. Additional sponsors included the Professional Beauty Association, Bumble and bumble, the Kohler Academy and the following Arizona-based day spas and salons: Salon Estique, Stephanie’s Day Spa and Mood Swings.
• On February 14, Spilo Worldwide donated a portion of its fourth-quarter 2006 proceeds from the sale of the Professional and Signature by Mehaz tweezers to Expedition Inspiration in support of breast cancer research. Expedition Inspiration organizes outdoor activities to raise funds. “We were thrilled that Spilo Worldwide chose us to be their beneficiary,” says Katie Powell, Expedition Inspiration’s director of special events.
A Win-Win Situation
Luck may have been on her side, but nail tech Heather Coulter definitely deserves the European vacation she won as the result of the Mehaz European Luxury Sweepstakes. “I’ve never won anything like this. I can’t wait to go,” says Coulter of her upcoming weeklong trip to Switzerland. Coulter’s win also became a prize for her Mehaz supplier, the Beauty Alliance Store in Pensacola, FL; Mehaz gave store manager Anise Sees a Fendi handbag and a gift card. “Our customers love the quality of Mehaz products and their lifetime guarantee,” says Sees. “I’m using the gift card to treat my team to dinner. We wouldn’t have won without everyone’s efforts.”
Mergers and Acquisitions
These industry leaders have formed impressive partnerships or have made prominent acquisitions during recent months:

• Bioelements will partner with Dermatrade to launch its professional skincare line in Mexico. The Mexico City-based Dermatrade will distribute Bioelements products to day spas, cosmetology schools and dermatological pharmacies. “Mexico has undergone significant growth in the skincare industry and has certainly become a desirable spa destination for people all across the globe,” says Barbara Salomone, president and founder of Bioelements.

• Earthlite has purchased Stronglite, a producer of massage tables, chairs and accessories for more than 20 years. Stronglite founder John Lloyd says he’s proud to pass on his company’s esteemed reputation to Earthlite. “In my opinion, Earthlite makes the highest quality massage tables in the industry and operates with the environmental and social principles that [we] espouse,” says Lloyd, who will continue to advise Earthlite on design and product development.

Laser Enlightenment
The National Coalition of Estheticians, Manufacturers/Distributors & Associations (NCEA) has established a Laser & Light Therapy for Cosmetic Procedures continuing education program as part of the NCEA Esthetician Certification Program that launches this month. The NCEA has established the program in an attempt to create standard practices and educate estheticians about the various FDA-class devices associated with laser and light treatments. “Understanding new scientific developments and how they work helps the esthetician determine if these devices are within the scope of practice,” says NCEA executive director Susanne Warfield. “NCEA believes that class I and class II devices can be safely used by estheticians and we strongly urge [them] to seek continuing education that includes both theoretical and practical application prior to using any new technologies.”
The 42-hour curriculum includes a history and overview of laser and light therapy, the anatomy and physiology of skin and hair, an overview of skin lesions and disorders, and client consultation that includes medical history. For more information and to order the program curriculum visit ncea.tv or call 201/670-4100, ext. 6.
