The Professional Beauty Association honored several industry luminaries recently at the 10th annual ABBIES (America’s Best Beauty Industry Efforts for Salons) awards. The reception was held in Long Beach, CA, in conjunction with the International Salon and Spa Expo (ISSE). “The ABBIES encourages innovation and creativity among those in the beauty business,” says SteveSleeper, executive director, PBA.
ABBIES awards are given annually in several categories including: Best Product Packaging, Best Merchandising Display and Best Print Advertisement. This year’s winners included Creative Nail Design (Best Print Advertisement in an Industry Publication—Nailcare division, Best Industry Website and Best Professional Public Relations Campaign); Dermalogica (Best Print Advertisement in an Industry Publication—Skincare division and Best Salon/Spa Corporate Image for Dermalogica on Montana in Santa Monica, CA); DePasquale Salon Systems (Best Distributor Catalog); DermaNew (Best ProductPackaging—Skin care division and Best Merchandising Display—Skincare division); Ecru New York (Best Advertisement in an Industry Publication—haircare division); OPI Products (Best Merchandising Display and Best Print Advertisement in a Consumer Publication—all entrants); and PureOlogy (Best Product Packaging).
The highest honor is the ABBIES Icon Award, given to long-time industry professionals whose business skills, achievements and innovations have had a lasting positive impact on the industry. This year’s Icon Award winners were: Michael Renzulli, chairman, Sally Beauty Company; David Wagner, owner of Juut Salonspa; and Paula Kent Meehan, founder Redken Laboratories and the Global Salon Business Awards/B.E.S.T. Foundation. |

Owner Zvi Ryzman decided to start the company after winning a supply of eyelashes in a coin toss. Today, AII has grown to more than 500 employees and 30 company acquisitions. | Sothys marks its 60th anniversary this year. |
In honor of Sothys’ 60th anniversary, Sothys Paris is launching the Digi-Massage Contest to award 10 estheticians full scholarships to attend a three-day advanced-training program scheduled for July 29th, 30th and August 1st, 2006, at the company’s Miami headquarters. Aveda Shines in April
April is Earth Month and each year Aveda highlights its commitment to environmental preservation and protection with an Earth Month campaign. This year the company is offering “Light the Way,” a limited edition 100% organic candle with all of the proceeds from the sale going to benefit Aveda’s Earth Month partners worldwide. Last year’s campaign raised almost $1.1 million that was distributed among Aveda’s Earth Month partner organizations. “Aveda is committed to preserving and protecting biodiversity,” says Dominique Conseil, Aveda president. “During Earth Month we take an active role in educating the public about the consequences of our actions on the health of
the planet.” |

The spa industry said good-bye to two colleagues in January. Frank Berg, president of Natural Health Spa Education and owner of The Beauty Resort in Eagle River, WI, passed away January 9. Berg was well-known for representing the GX-99 and Steamy Wonder at industry trade shows. He’s survived by his 17-year-old daughter Andrea, who graduates from high school this year. On January 2, the spa industry lost Seymour Finkelstein, former CEO of Glemby International and 2004 recipient of the International Chain Salon Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Finkelstein, a World War II veteran, attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. “Dad really loved the beauty business and the people who worked in it,” says Seymour’s son Andrew Finkelstein, president of The Beauty Resource and author of “The Finkelstein Report.” |

Hollywood and the beauty industry often collide, each enhancing the other in their efforts to please the public. Here are a few recent examples:
Inside the 11th annual Critics’ Choice Awards gift lounge, celebrities that included Brendan Fraser, Emmy Rossum, John Leguizamo and Rosario Dawson indulged in the newest products from Creative Nail Design. Rossum, a presenter for the ceremony, chose feminine shades like Romantique, Beau and French Pink, and Fraser promised to massage his pregnant wife’s feet with Creative Nail Design’s SpaPedicure massage oil.
Rocker Courtney Love and soap opera diva Nadia Bjorlin were seen out on the town recently wearing hot nail colors from China Glaze. Love found something to love in Ruby Pumps, a vibrant red with tone-on-tone red glitter, while Bjorlin fell for PediCURE colors from the Babes in Toeland collection.
Attendees of the 14th annual Women in Entertainment breakfast held recently at the Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA, received a complimentary gift from hair company PureOlogy, that included the DryShine Styler and NanoWorks Treatment. Sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter, the event honors the year’s top 100 women for their passion and leadership in film, television and music.
