Members of Dermalogica’s
skincare “tribe” recently convened in Barcelona,
Spain, for three days of intensive work and play. More
than 2,000 professionals from 40 international markets
learned from company founder and CEO Jane Wurwand about
the role of touch in their work. Wurwand explored in
depth how the power of touch is abused, undervalued
and misunderstood in our “touch-starved society.”
Pevonia ... Stripped
Pevonia Botanica was recently
featured on the Style Network series Stripped. In a
special episode all about spas titled “Spa-Licious,”
viewers were shown Pevonia’s new headquarters
in Daytona Beach, Florida, and learned about the history,
success and celebrity following of Pevonia products.

ISPA HONORS

During the 15th annual International Spa
Association (ISPA) Conference and Expo
in Dallas this past October, ISPA honored four individuals
who have contributed to the growth of the spa industry.
Deborah Szekely received the 2005 ISPA Alex Szekely
Humanitarian Award for dedicating more than 65 years
to improving humanity through the spa experience; John
and Ginny Lopis received the ISPA 2005 Visionary Award
for encouraging others to transform words into actions;
and Jack Morrison was the recipient of the 2005 ISPA
Dedicated Contributor Award for being a loyal ISPA member
and for his help in developing and promoting the ISPA
Foundation’s “Uniform System of Financial
Reporting for Spas.”

Ginger Bay Salon & Spa Group in St. Louis recently opened its doors on a day normally
closed to the public to host a day of relaxation for
the women of Lydia’s House, a local charity providing transitional
housing to survivors of domestic violence. The women
were treated to services for hair, skin and nails (www.lydiashouse.org).
The Artistic Academy school
of cosmetology in Morris Plains, New Jersey, recently
spent a day pampering a group from Hope House, a local
multiservice agency that provides professionally
based social services to those who are oppressed, powerless
or otherwise disenfranchised

Olga’s Day Spa in Highland
Park, Illinois, held its 6th Annual Day of Beauty to
raise funds for the Rory David Deutsch Foundation, an
organization dedicated to finding a cure for pediatric
brain cancer. All proceeds from spa services, raffle
prizes and silent auction winnings went directly to
the Foundation—a total of $8,500 (www.roryd.org).

Granting Massages BIOTONE Professional Massage & Spa
Therapy Products was honored by the Massage
Therapy Foundation in September 2005 as a sustaining
benefactor for its contribution to co-sponsor a range
of Foundation grants. Of the $15,000 in supporting funds,
$10,000 will be applied to a research project focusing
on massage therapy in healthcare delivery. The remaining
$5,000 will go toward grants given to massage therapy
community service projects.

Murad Celebrates 10
El Segundo, California-based Murad Medical
Spa marked its 10-year anniversary on
October 11, 2005, by holding an open-house celebration.
Guests were treated to hors d’oeuvres and goji
berry smoothies, a drawing for 10 gift baskets, and
a choice of three mini services, including a vitamin
C hand treatment, an exfoliating mini-facial and a Water
Principle consultation.
During an opening presentation, Survivor host Jeff Probst
shared his story of using Murad products to heal his
skin from sun damage received during the show’s
first year of filming. John Kobarra, a representative
from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles/Inland
Empire, gave Dr. Howard Murad an award for his continuing
support. (The Murad Spa donated its profits from that
week to the organization.) And El Segundo mayor Kelly
McDowell declared October 11, 2005, Murad’s 10th
Anniversary Day. In addition, Murad gave guests a sneak peek at drawings
from the Murad Center for Inclusive Health, a clinic
designed to promote health from the inside out that’s
set to open early in 2006.

The Day Spa Association (DSA)
is currently conducting a survey of all industry professionals
to explore financial planning, education, insurance,
human resource issues and more. The survey takes 5-10
minutes to complete and is open until the end of February
