About 40,000 women in the U.S. die from breast cancer each year, and hundreds of thousands more are diagnosed. Thankfully, there have been some important research breakthroughs to help fight those numbers—most notably, the identification of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes as predisposing markers to developing the disease. Armed with the knowledge that she has the gene, a woman may become more vigilant about self-examinations and screenings, or even choose prophylactic surgery.

The race to find a cure is ongoing, but in the meantime studies continue to uncover fascinating and, in many cases, promising results.
