Sticky Situation: Not-So-Supportive Staff

What do you when an employee bad-mouths a co-worker to a client?

The Situation: "We once had an employee who was not what I would call a team player," recalls Summer Langhorne, general manager of milk + honey in Austin, Texas. "She had it in her head that she was the best at her job and she put down another staff member in front of a client."

The Solution: "I started by documenting the conversations," says Langhorne. "I then gradually retrained her by coaching her on the benefits and importance of supporting all your co-workers. When people are good at their jobs but have an issue that needs ironing out, it's best to work with them directly and take into account their unique personalities, and that’s what we did in this case. We're really big on coaching here."
