Decorating Tidbits

Let your day spa double as an art gallery. Jae Jampol, co-owner of BodyWise Holistic Spa and Lifetime Wellness Center (www.thebodywiseway.com), suggests "artcycling" as "a fun way to decorate." It also generates exposure for local artists. Periodically select new artists and rotate their work throughout your space. Plus, it gives clients something new to look forward to.

Is your building older than 1978? If so, don't scrape or sand off paint that might be lead-based. It may release dangerous lead particles into the air. Instead, heed the advice from the National Paint & Coatings Association (www.paint.org): Layer a primer directly on top of old paint to seal it, then use an eco-friendly one over the primer.

The EPA estimates that indoor air is 20 times more polluted than outdoor air, even in industrialized cities. For more stats and facts about indoor air quality and what you can do to improve it, sign up for a free e-book, Paint's Dirty Little Secrets, at www.healthylivingpaints.com.

Facility: Let Green Light In

Green Scene

Lighting is a crucial component in creating the proper atmosphere in a spa. Now, many spas choose lighting that helps save the planet and reduces energy bills. For example, did you know that compact florescent lamps use 75% less energy and last 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs?

Listed below are six additional things you can do to make your spa’s lighting more eco-conscious. These tips are excerpted from the article, “Ready, Set, Glow” by Layla Revis, published in the June issue of DAYSPA. Read the complete article in PDF format.

Quick DIY Fixes

  • Make the most of natural daylight.
  • Paint walls and ceilings in subtle hues that reflect light.
  • Install a lighting control system that follows a set schedule, so lamps automatically turn off.
  • Reserve task lighting for areas where brightness is beneficial, such as the cash wrap or bathrooms.
  • Replace halogen MR16s with infrared MR16 lamps; it’s an almost no-cost retrofit that cuts energy
    use by 25%.
  • For new constructions, consider ceramic metal halide and LED fixtures.
