Decorating Tidbits

Let your day spa double as an art gallery. Jae Jampol, co-owner of BodyWise Holistic Spa and Lifetime Wellness Center (www.thebodywiseway.com), suggests "artcycling" as "a fun way to decorate." It also generates exposure for local artists. Periodically select new artists and rotate their work throughout your space. Plus, it gives clients something new to look forward to.

Is your building older than 1978? If so, don't scrape or sand off paint that might be lead-based. It may release dangerous lead particles into the air. Instead, heed the advice from the National Paint & Coatings Association (www.paint.org): Layer a primer directly on top of old paint to seal it, then use an eco-friendly one over the primer.

The EPA estimates that indoor air is 20 times more polluted than outdoor air, even in industrialized cities. For more stats and facts about indoor air quality and what you can do to improve it, sign up for a free e-book, Paint's Dirty Little Secrets, at www.healthylivingpaints.com.

Star Treatment: Polar Express Massage

This summer, Just Calm Down Spa in New York City is offering a prescription for overheated urbanites. The spa took its popular Morocckin’ on the Marrakech Express Massage and replaced the warm essential oils for cold-season ones to create a pampering Polar Express Massage (60 min./$165).
With temperatures up, ingredients such as peppermint oil, eucalyptus, tea tree and cucumber cool the body. The treatment, which is performed on a cooled waterbed, also fends off heat-loving bacteria that leads to breakouts.
Finally, rhythmic tapotement techniques using warm cloths increase the effect of the peppermint. It produces an invigorating and refreshing result.

THE PROTOCOL
1) The therapist begins by guiding the client through yogic stretching. This includes a series of sustained poses and motions to facilitate and enhance breathing, increase range of motion and provide joint flexibility.

2) Using a blend of peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree and cucumber oils, the therapist begins a massage technique called tapotement. This is a rhythmic, percussive stroke that promotes circulation, and gently exfoliates and heightens the senses.

3) Continuing the tapotement technique, the therapist incorporates warm clothes along the body. The heat generated by their warmth highlights the cooling, evaporating effect of the peppermint blend.

4) The therapist ends the treatment with yogic stretches.
