A traditional Turkish hammam (which translates to "spreader of warmth") is a full-sensory bathing and relaxation experience that can last days. "The body is taken through a sensual ritual of heat, steam, massage, detoxification, energy and—when completely cleansed, purified and limber—drenched in scent and moisture," says Inga Zapara, owner of New York City's Great Jones Spa.
Zapara offers her clients a modern take on the ritual. The Red Flower Hammam Treatment (90 min./$230) is a five-step experience that includes exfoliation with olive stones, coffee and lemons, a Moroccan clay body wrap, full-body Turkish massage and vichy shower. Each step utilizes botanical essential oils, carefully chosen for their therapeutic benefits and heady, rich scent.
The Protocol:
1. The client is cleansed with Moroccan mint tea and salt.
2. A vigorous exfoliation is performed with a blend of coffee, olive stones and fresh lemons.

3. The body is painted with Rhassoul clay and wrapped to draw impurities out of the body.
4. After a vichy shower, the skin is recharged with a mixture of quince and orange blossom.
5. The finale is a warming full-body Turkish massage, using the healing essences of cardamom, jasmine, bergamot, amber and clove.
