Green Tip of the Month

Sustainable Sincerity

Our upcoming Green Scene ("Mayan Marvel," September 2010) contains helpful tips on how to detect greenwashing when perusing "organic" product labels. That's when companies try to unjustifiably tout a product's environmental virtues.

As John Vater, co-ower of Spa Adriana in Huntington, New York, warns, "The big print giveth and the small print taketh away."

Here's some information about avoiding this pitfall:

  • Read labels with a discriminating eye.
John and his wife, co-owner Adriana Vater, caution spa professionals against taking a product label at face value. "If the packaging claims it doesn't contain something, you should ask yourself what's there to do that ingredient's job," Adriana says. "Every component of a product has a purpose, and sometimes a so-called 'green' ingredient is just as offensive as the original."
  • Educate yourself.
The Vaters say it's important to develop an understanding of how product ingredients work. "With today's Internet access, you can quickly look up the chemical composition of any item," John says.

It's not always easy going green. How do you ensure that your spa's environmental initiatives result in real, positive change? Send your ideas to Katie O'Reilly, associate editor, at koreilly@creativeage.com.

Star Treatment: Lavender is for Lovers

Nothing says "I Heart You" more than a couples massage on Valentine's Day. At Spa Luce (www.spaluce.com) in the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel & Spa in Hollywood, California, couples soak in a tub for two and then enjoy an aromatherapy rubdown with The French Lavender Sea Bath and Massage Ritual (90 min./$320).

The aromatherapy benefits of lavender provide calming, normalizing and relaxing sensations. Its known to ease the nervous system and reduce stress in the body with its healing antispasmodic abilities.

The treatment begins in the tub using lavender mineral salts to help couples clear their minds. It's followed with a side-by-side massage that treats them to an essential oil blend of lavender petite, peppermint and rosemary, which brings balance and alignment to their bodies.

What better way to connect with a loved one.

THE PROTOCOL

1. Draw bath and pour in lavender bath salts to dissolve warm water.

2. Warm French lavender massage oil in a cabby.

3. Infuse eight hand towels with hot water and 3 tablespoons of lavender oil. Place in a cabby to warm.

4. Welcome couple to treatment and show them into the bath. Leave two large bath sheets for clients to dry themselves. Instruct the couple to come to the massage table after soaking for 20 minutes and lie face down.

5. Once on the massage table, encourage deep-cleansing breathes and further relaxation by using steamy towels infused with French lavender massage oil.

6. Massage clients with the oil for the next 60 minutes.
